I’ll Take “Wiz Wit” for $500, Alex.

Every Friday is “11 Things” day at Living Behind the Curve.

In a bit of a departure from our typical “11 Things” posts, please allow me to pimp out the best free blogging and podcasting unconference this side of the Mason-Dixon line, Podcamp Philly! It’s a free New Media get together being held at Drexel University on September 7, 8 and 9. Ladles and jellyspoons, I present 11 Things You Can Do At PodCamp Philly:

1. Set up your token ring
Yes, it’s a terrible, terrible old geeky reference; no, I’m not misspelling Tolkien. The best thing you can do at a conference — sorry, unconference, is to network. Pimp yourself out. Strike up conversations, and pass out business cards with the name of your blog, podcast, vidcast, or drinking game. You’ll probably pick up a few new subscribers.

2. Play The Dozens, podcast style
Yo, music.podcast.com so slow, Digital Flotsam updated twice before it loaded, biatch.

3. Be a tourist
If the Podcamp turns out to be a little slow, why not go outside into the beautiful overcast Philadelphia weather and ask folks on the street where the restaurant is that serves Philly cheese steaks and soft pretzels. Just make sure we get to watch.

4. Podcast the event “live”
You’ll be totally unoriginal of you walk around with your microphone and your iRiver asking people what they’re doing. Do it anyway, because it’s fun, and it makes for an easy show when you get home.

5. Go play with the green screen studio
Drexel has a green screen studio, and they apparently are willing to let the podcampers play with it. How cool is that?

6. Get your voice coached
Rick Glasby will he helping people who are concerned with how their voices sound. We suggest that, if you’re concerned with your vocal quality, you take a weekend and listen to everyone that isn’t Carl Castle or Garrison Keillor, and realize that they’re just a bunch of radio-weenies just like you. Just with more practice.

7. Attend sessions
You’ve got 6 tracks to choose from, from the basics of audio and video production to the issues New Media specifically present to educators. Go learn something.

8. Present a session
I noticed that despite the podcamp being for all New Media geeks, there’s a distinct lack of blogging sessions. I also think there might be a place for a consumer panel discussion… sit down and tell the writers and producers what the people who actually use all this media think! Regardless, there’s always room for more.

9. Trade iffy and unconfirmed sightings of King Bonk
Do I smell burning railroad ties?

10.  Listen to people
We are converging and creating a temporary community based around the shared need to make our voices heard, and the shared medium of the internet. Everyone is going to tell you that this is an invaluable opportunity to talk to you peers, and it is, but I’m going to tell you that it is a better opportunity to listen. Just shut up for a few minutes about your show or blog and listen to what the other guy has to say. Buy someone a drink and get them talking. Listen to what the people around you have to say, and you might just learn something in all this.

That’s all for this week, folks. Have a great weekend, and I’ll see you on Monday.
