It was also the first thing to go when we got into serious budgeting and frugality, because we learned that money earmarked for unquestioned spending will be spent. Regardless, if done right, adult allowances are an excellent first baby step in getting your spending under control. I particularly think that combining cash allowances with something like your monthly gas budget in a two-car relationship helps give the whole exercise a little bit more gravity than just handing out hers-n-hers latte money for the month.
