DNA

2007 September 25

I’ve been listening to the Occult of Personality podcast for the last few days, at least that’s what I think it is. They’ve recently hade a couple of Deep Thinking Conspiracists on, and they’ve criticized the idea of “junk DNA”, saying that They either won’t say or don’t know what this stuff actually does, but it can’t possibly be junk.

Disregarding the theory that human junk DNA houses the programmed history of an alien race, I suspect that junk DNA may in fact be junk. If you think of DNA as a biological method of transmitting information, think of how long it takes information to be encoded there (like a new instinct, for instance).

About 100,000 years ago, when Homo Sapiens Sapiens hit the scene, it came with a much more efficient method of transmitting information, by memory and education and facilitated through interpersonal communication. Perhaps that “junk” DNA is an evolutionary throwback, encoding information we don’t need it to encode anymore.

Considering the potential for genetic disease and cancer we have, it might be interesting to see if a simplification of the genetic code is in our future — but that’s just a random speculation from a blogger.
